Born and raised in Dallas, TX, Rek is a multi-instrumentalist whose musical journey began in childhood and has since spanned the globe. Skilled in a diverse range of instruments, including guitar, didgeridoo, mandocello, Irish bouzouki, hand drums, and even spoons, Rek weaves together styles and sounds that reflect a lifetime of exploration.
Rek’s guitar playing is rooted in the fingerstyle traditions of Mississippi John Hurt, with later influences from Jerry Garcia, creating a unique blend of intricate, soulful melodies. Beyond traditional guitar, Rek has crafted ambient soundscapes using a custom effects board that mimics the resonant frequencies of singing bowls. This innovative approach has led to performances at sound bath events, where his guitar becomes a meditative and sound healing instrument.
As a poet with a published book of poems, Rek brings a lyrical depth to his songwriting, moving fluidly between evocative, complex verses and simple, sweet melodies. His music has been described as a blend of lyrical introspection and gentle storytelling.
Rek’s performances, from the shores of Australia to an African drum residency, are imbued with a global perspective and a love for connecting with people. From 2019 to 2023, Rek dedicated all tips from performances to local charities, raising over $2500.
